Requirements for Monitoring Lead-Acid Battery VRLA

Purpose of lead-acid battery VRLA monitoring

Currently, the management of lead-acid battery VRLA groups is mainly carried out through regular maintenance. Generally, manual measurements of the battery voltage and internal resistance are taken periodically, and a check discharge is carried out once a year or every few years.

However, this maintenance method has the following disadvantages

  • Large workload, leading to overwhelming maintenance personnel;

  • Unable to grasp real-time and systematic data for battery group operation and analysis;

  • High maintenance risk.

In order to completely solve these problems, a battery online monitoring system must be established to monitor the important parameters of the battery's single cell voltage, group voltage, single cell internal resistance, and battery negative temperature online. Once a parameter has an anomaly or a change trend has an anomaly, an alarm should be immediately issued. This will enable management and maintenance personnel to discover problems or potential hazards in a timely manner, and take action promptly, ensuring the reliability and safety of the UPS system.

The main purpose of installing a battery monitoring system is to

  • Detect the potential risk of battery fires and issue warnings in advance;

  • Warn of battery failure in advance, eliminate potential hazards, and ensure the safety of the UPS system;

  • Eliminate the need for regular manual measurements of internal resistance and voltage, saving manpower and material resources;

  • Quickly detect charging faults and extend the life of the battery group;

  • Accumulate the actual operating experience of different brands and models of equipment and batteries through systematic data analysis, which can serve as a reference for selection.

Development of lead-acid battery VRLA monitoring technology

First generation

Concentrated monitoring of single cell voltage of lead-acid battery VRLA. Disadvantages: can only judge the health of the entire group, unable to identify the fault cell, difficult to wire, high cost, complicated construction, and low accuracy with large error and difficult installation.

Second generation

Distributed monitoring of single cell voltage and internal resistance of the battery. Advantages: intelligent battery digital fine management and Internet of Things technology, good expandability, simple construction, supporting battery life extension.

Selection of lead-acid battery VRLA monitoring equipment

Reasonable accuracy

Lead-acid batteries should meet monitoring specification requirements.

Reliability

Mainly considering the insulation voltage level. In addition, the equipment's protection functions, such as power supply circuit with anti-short circuit and reverse connection, overvoltage protection, voltage sampling line with current limiting protection, internal resistance test line with fuse protection, can also prevent data loss.

Visual display

Display the battery voltage, internal resistance, and temperature, and produce column charts and trend charts. Data and curve charts can switch freely on historical alarms and current alarm classification display, etc.

Data acquisition

Fast acquisition speed, no hidden data for sudden changes; multi-dimensional parameters such as voltage, current, internal resistance, and temperature; multiple angles such as compared with single reference cell, deviation of group comparison, thermal runaway, single cell voltage curve, and group voltage current fluctuation comparison, etc.
